Getting to Know You

I figured I should make an intro post of sorts; hello :)

Born and raised in Suburbia, Southern California, I decided to stay local for college. I don't think I'd make it in harsher weather, not going to lie! I'm a total geek. No, really. Raised watching Star Wars on long car rides, one of my earliest memories of my dad is him teaching me the Vulcan salute. I'm a statistics major. (That one stands alone!) I'm quite enamored with The Lord of the Rings, and happen to be able to write fairly fluently in Tengwar script (Elvish, for all you non-geeks out there). It would also seem that I enjoy using parenthetical asides and semi-colons. I recently decided that it might be fun to record some of my exploits as I'm (legitimately!) growing up.

Understand that I had pretty much the same group of friends for the first eighteen or so years of my life. I spent my high school days amassing t-shirts, often yelling downstairs to my mom in a panic before leaving for school, "What should I wear?!" Ever patient (and quite aware of my style), my mom would reply, "I don't know... Jeans and a t-shirt?" Good call, Mom! I also tended to avoid cooking at all costs. As my mom loved to cook, I could manage to forgo the culinary arts. Not to mention, cooking scared (maybe this should be in the present tense... scares) me--something about the knives and the fire and the hot metal... I'd like to note here that my mom once told me that there are two types of cooks: burners or cutters; she's both. I'd like not to find out which I am, thank you very much, so I remain not a cook.

However, a few months ago, I moved into my first apartment: I started trying to cook (Out of necessity! There's only so far sandwiches can take you, and I don't have a microwave), and I elected to at least attempt to look professional in my classes. Another big change for me came when I finally decided to chop off my hair; I'd been thinking about it for months, but one day in October, I finally walked into SuperCuts and requested a style eighteen inches shorter. When asked what I wanted for Christmas, I indicated that I would like a nice straightener and some good wardrobe-building pieces of clothing. I later amended the list to add the newest Sufjan Stevens CDs, but still, it's clear I've grown up a little.

(These pictures were taken by my sister at the Getty museum on Black Friday :) )

Hence the blog; no one will believe it unless if I document it! I feel as if I'm preparing a statement for insurance purposes. That, and I really want to try to start writing more. I recently found out that I don't have time to double major in creative writing, but that doesn't mean that I should stop writing!

I might not be updating regularly because my first priority is my livejournal (my angsting keeps me sane--don't judge me!), but I'm going to try to make this my New Year's thing.

Thanks for reading!

  1. I know we always say that we became friends in second grade over Pokemon, but this, I think, is what actually happened:

*In minds of Jacqueline/Shannon*: Hmmm, I think that girl over there will someday share my love of parenthetical asides and semicolons; I think I'll go talk to her. (Could this be love?)

Yeah, forget LOTR and Star Trek and all of that...it's the semicolons.
